RIP Michael

Today marks the 7 year anniversary of the death of my friend Michael. You can read more about him here, and a brief reflection here.

Atque in perpetuum, frāter, avē atque valē.

Oh what fun…

I decided to give the new iOS4 a go. Upgrading an Apple device is always an exotic adventure, fraught with danger, but promising a rich reward if you manage to survive the journey.

Halfway through it decided to crash out and freeze, leaving me no option but to reset. Then it decided it needed to restore the default settings. I am currently looking at an Apple icon wth a motionless wheel of some sort.

This better be worth it.

UPDATE: I think I have killed it.

UPDATE 2: Have there ever been sweeter words than “Restore in Progress”?

UPDATE 3: Ahhhh “Sync in Progress”

About time – DC Comics comes to iPhone

After obviously waiting to see how Marvel’s foray went, DC Comics have finally released their iPhone/iPad app. Looks pretty!

KRUDD

UPDATE: Rudd is out.

Exciting times. It looks like before the day is out we will have a new Prime Minister, and the first female one to boot.

I find it hard to comprehend that the man who dazzled Australia with his new age campaign that encompassed talk shows and Facebook has crashed from such dizzying heights without even seeing out a full term in the top job.

I had always had a fair bit of time for Kevin Rudd as the Shadow Foreign Minister. His appearances on morning television made him seem erudite and an intellectual, with a balanced outlook that went beyond partisan politics. I never took him serious as a Prime Ministerial contender though, I figured he was probably a bit too much of an intellectual, almost a geek, to appeal to the electorate. But, I was wrong, obviously. Outrageous!!!

A few years ago I discovered the Timmverse, and I was immediately hooked. I watched everything I could find (not always easy in the Antipodes) and found it far more satisfying than most of the live action movies and TV shows I had seen. From the noir feel of the Batman series to the gritty story arcs of Justice League Unlimited, for me this will always be the definitive interpretation of the DC Universe against which all others will be judged. I am afraid that as good as Christian Bale is, Kevin Conroy will always be the REAL Batman to me.

So, when I finally got Foxtel (a sorry saga I may relate for cynical amusement sometime, Dear Reader) I was disappointed to see that they weren’t currently showing any of these episodes. Needing a DC fix I decided to start watching Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from it. Read the rest of this entry »

WEEKEND ROUNDUP – Are New Zealand the new Australia?

Another Monday morning, another weekend gone. it was a sports dominated weekend, makes me feel almost healthy!

Saturday our cricket team played in the winter competition that started this year. Unfortunately, it was a day to forget, both personally and for the team. Our team is among the better teams playing, and we came up against a team yet to record a win. We should have won easily however in the end we just weren’t good enough. As usual it was our batting that let us down.

As for me, well I started out by running someone out, which was exciting. However when I got a chance to bowl I was very expensive, despite the fact I didn’t think that I actually bowled too badly. I ran into two batsman playing well, and they got on top of me. I did have an edge to the keeper that wasn’t taken, and another catch taken right on the boundary only for the fielder to step over the line, so it became a six (certainly not his fault, it was unavoidable) as well as a few balls that fooled them completely. And, the boundaries were very short which never helps a spin bowler. But, the stats don’t record these things, it will just show a disappointing performance. And excuses aside, I just didn’t bowl as well as I know I can.

On a happier note, on Saturday night we had our Club’s presentation night for the summer season just gone. There were a lot of exciting things, both on and off the field to celebrate, and a real sense of purpose and a desire to make sure next season is even bigger and better.

Also this weekend, I watched my first soccer World Cup match for this year. I wouldn’t call myself a huge soccer fan, but I did get sucked in by the excitement surrounding the previous World Cup and Australia’s golden run. I have been to a few A-League matches and enjoyed them immensely. Read the rest of this entry »

A Rose by any other name…

For some strange reason, I found this article laugh out loud hilarious (as in my vocal cords vibrated to emit a sound denoting mirth or amusement, not just the LOL people throw around). It did earn me few funny looks.

I don’t know whether it was the original article, the fact that people seemed to be deliberately trying to crash the commenting system with outrageous names or the fact that some of the commenters go so very angry at the lack of real world application of the post.

It’s as if they were outraged that the blog owner dared to post something that approached levity and didn’t give them a solution on a silver platter. Then again, it could have been their latest stop in a futile search to solve a mission critical issue with their database that was costing millions. That would make me angry.

Christian Carnival CCCXXXII

Last time around, one of my favourite reads was the Christian Carnival, a roaming colelction of posts from a wide range of Christian bloggers. It was always exciting to read posts by people you might not otherwise be exposed to, and a chance for people to get extra readers.

I was excited to see that Christian Carnival is still going strong after all this time, check out the latest edition here!

THE ODI IS DEAD! (LONG LIVE THE ODI!)

One of the selling points my wife used to convince me to get Foxtel was that I would be able to watch a whole lot more cricket. In the end I caved, like the good husband I am, and she was right. Last night I got to watch Ireland take on Australia, and it was well worth watching. While in the end Ireland fell short, they certainly gave Australia a scare. I find it hard to believe that Ireland don’t deserve to be knocking on the Full Member door.

They are a great argument for the contention that the quickest way a team can increase its competitiveness is by working hard on its fielding. They have a sponsor that is obviously both passionate about cricket and happy with the returns on their investment and most importantly they have a strong fan base and kids getting into the game. It was exciting to see how full the ground was, which leads me onto my main point. Read the rest of this entry »
